With a well-thought-out UX design, the product will be fully flushed out before development begins. For the developers, it leads to a more streamlined development plan. For the user, it means a product that is easy to use. For stakeholders, it results in a more successful final product, which means more money saved and more money made.

In this post, I’ll explain what UX design is. We’ll cover roles and responsibilities, tools and strategies, and finally, what differentiates UX from UI design. Let’s dive in!

Keyhole Labs has announced the release of Version 2.0 of its free UI design tool MockOla, adding features and capabilities that enhance the design process.

MockOla is a free 2D drawing tool that allows users to easily build UI wireframes, free-form designs, and UML diagrams with a simple drag-and-drop editor. MockOla is available online, is free to use, and allows users to easily create custom designs and mockups.

This new version of MockOla includes a new dashboard with an enhanced look and feel, the addition of new palettes and elements, a function to upload and add photos into designs, and the ability to use the tool without creating an account or logging in.

Java-Based UI Frameworks

In today’s development environment, there is an abundance of frameworks that we can choose from for front-end or user interface (UI) work.

I was recently talking with a friend about UI development. He has also been a programmer since programming was considered an arcane art (when those of us that did it were considered like Gandalf the Grey facing the Balrog). Or maybe we just saw ourselves that way. Regardless, both of us have been Java programmers for a great deal of that time.

We both lamented the fact that it was a context switch to go from coding most of our projects in Java, then needing to switch to JavaScript for the front end.

Based on conversations I’ve seen online, several readers are warming up their keyboards to chide me for complaining about having to code in JavaScript. Keep your keys cool, both of us and our co-workers are experienced in, and happy to write in, JavaScript and any of its frameworks for our clients. But using JavaScript isn’t always the best approach.
