Predicting River Flow with a Supervised Learning Time Series Model

Alex Lagge Articles, Data Science, Machine Learning 1 Comment

In this blog, we will build a flow rate prediction algorithm for the Norfork River in Arkansas. Both farmers and recreationists are heavily dependent on the flow rate of the river. As the river flows faster, the risk of flooding increases and flooding can destroy crops for farmers and ruin vacations for tourists.

My goal with this flow rate prediction algorithm was to give a better idea of what the next 4 days of river flow will look like. Below, I will discuss the data science process that I underwent to make these predictions.

Using Groovy 4: GINQ for the Win

In my last blog post Back in the Groovy 4, I briefly mentioned Groovy-Integrated Query (GINQ). I’ve been wanting to write about how I would use this new feature, and I decided to take this opportunity to do so.

In this post, I will be describing two examples in which I used GINQ. The first requirement I faced on a recent project of mine and demonstrating how I used GINQ to fulfill it. A quick disclaimer: this is not a tutorial on GINQ. This blog is merely a discussion of how I’ve used GINQ and how I plan on making it part of my toolkit.

Stripe Elements Integration

Getting Started With Stripe Elements Integration

Recently, I was involved with a project that required the client to collect payments from their customers. This brought up many questions on the best approach to process orders to accomplish this.

We wondered, is a Stripe Elements integration the answer, or can we avoid fees and process payments ourselves? For the vast majority of companies, ourselves included, yes, Stripe is the answer. The complexity of Payment Card Industry (PCI) Compliance alone makes this a no-brainer. In addition, the development of payment infrastructure is very time-consuming and costly.

In this blog, I will discuss Stripe Elements and its integration and the best way to implement them with React. I will cover basic Stripe information, how to set up a Stripe account, and a brief code overview to help you get on your way to incorporating Stripe…

Moving Google Tag Manager from Xamarin to Flutter

While working with a major theater chain, I was tasked with implementing Analytics into their Xamarin app. Part of that work included implementing Google Tag Manager. At a later date, I was again tasked with implementing Google Tag Manager but this time, into their Flutter app. I expected the implementation to be similar and definitely easier the second time around, but I found that to be false. The setup had some major twists and turns that I didn’t expect.

Although this was sometimes a frustrating challenge, I had fun figuring it out. Most companies running their apps with Xamarin will be moving their apps to a newer SDK like Flutter at some point. Flutter allows cross platform development for Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows, Google Fuchsia, and Web from a single codebase and shared languages. So this move is almost inevitable.

In this post, Iโ€™ll take you through a step-by-step tutorial of transferring from Xamarin to Flutter. By the end, GTM will be in your Flutter app!
